From Kaysun Corporation, a great piece on the injection molding process: Injection molding is a dynamic, complex process that requires testing and usually some adjustments to get it to perfection. It’s not an exact science, but some manufacturers focus on the specifications of the mold first and then build the process around the finalized mold, hoping this saves time and money. This approach, however, often results in production problems, slowing the whole process down and reducing the quality and repeatability.
“The best approach is developing a consistent, efficient process first, followed by fine-tuning the mold to the process.”
When you’re buying molded parts made from different types of plastics, it’s crucial you know about some of parts defects that can lower the quality of the molded plastic parts. If you know the sources of the defects and flaws they can cause, you can work in conjunction with your plastic injection molding company to maintain the highest standard of quality during production. “In a manufacturing firm, revenue is generated and costs incurred through the performance of activities.” This article from Industry Week argues that it’s important to analyze the cost of each activity – to trace the cost of specific activities in the value stream. Companies who do this have the benefit of fully understanding what financial benefit will result when a specific activity is improved or eliminated.
This is the lean journey, and there are 5 key steps outlined in the full article HERE.
Ever wonder what it takes to mold complex parts? Well, that’s the topic that Ken Glassen covers in one of his most recent injection molding blog posts. There’s no doubt that the higher the complexity, the higher the skill-level required from the injection molder, but the environment plays a key role in the molding. From the facility’s air flow to the level of equipment and automation tools, every factor counts when the part is complex. “Maintaining a stable, injection molding climate reduces the environmental impacts that fluctuating temperature can have on operations.”
My name is Randy Kerkstra, and I have been living and breathing injection molding for 26 years. I’m excited about starting this blog to share lessons learned over the years and to assist the industry (more…)
