The Designer’s Edge – Self Locking Cylinders from MoldMakingTechnology.com

Hydraulics and efficient molding go hand in hand.  In this recent article on MoldMakingTechnology.com, Randy explains when a self locking cylinder is an attractive and effective option.

The basic message is that a locking cylinder is a good option when there is not sufficient space for the required bore size.  This option helps prevent blow back via a mechanical lock on set position that will lock the hydraulic piston. (more…)

INJECTION MOLD TOOLING: Designing the Tool for the Material

Designing the tool based on the material to be used is one way that Randy has been able to enlarge his process window, reducing the risk of quality issues.

In this article, he addresses many of the considerations and gives real examples with real materials and real situations that happen in shops every day.

The Designer’s Edge: Avoiding Cylinder Failure – moldmakingtechnology.com article

Hydraulics are a very important element of successful and effective tooling, and Randy continues his hydraulics focused article series on moldmakingtechnology.com.

This article discusses the importance of having enough pressure or a cylinder that is rated to provide enough pressure based on the needs of the mold.

Randy does a nice job of explaining the concept and also provides a few things to consider when it comes to the cylinder ratings.  You can read the entire article here: The Designer’s Edge: Avoiding Cylinder Failure

The Importance of Gate Geometry – ptonline.com article

The size and shape of the gates used in mold making are often not given the attention they deserve.  Randy Kerkstra believes that many of the common assumptions about gate geometry should be challenged.  In his recent article on Plastics Technology (http://www.ptonline.com), he explains how he learned about gating and runners when he transitioned from tooling to the molding floor.

This article really goes in depth on several of the factors and considerations of Gate Geometry.  You can read the entire article here: The Importance of Gate Geometry

Designer’s Edge: How to Correctly Size a Hydraulic Cylinder

Randy Kerkstra has continued his series on Hydraulics on moldmakingtechnology.com, and this article focuses on how to size a hydraulic cylinder.  In true Randy style, he broke it down into 3 easy to understand steps:

  1. Understand the maximum plastics pressure to calculate the the plastics pressure the cavity surface area will have on the component.
  2. Accurately calculate the the cavity surface that is on the surface area of the component.
  3. Determine the bore size of your cylinder.

He goes on to give more detail on each step, and also gives an example on how to size it.  You can read the entire article here: The Designer’s Edge: How to Correctly Size a Hydraulic Cylinder
